The relations of self-compassion, implicit theories of intelligence, and mental health outcomes among Chinese adolescents

The present study aims at identifying the relations of self-compassion, implicit theories of intelligence, and mental health outcomes among Chinese adolescents. Bivariate correlations, regression analysis, and structural equation modelling were employed to test the relationships. A sample of Chinese adolescents (N = 2023) completed series of surveys measuring self-compassion, implicit theories of intelligence, and mental health outcomes. Results indicated that: (1) all aspects of self-compassion and implicit theories of intelligence are positively correlated, (2) self-compassion and implicit theories of intelligence were predictive in reducing negative mental health outcomes, and (3) selfcompassion partially mediated the relationship between implicit theories of intelligence and negative mental health outcomes reported. These findings suggested that inclusion of self-compassion and implicit theories of intelligence may be beneficial in combating the mental health crisis among the Chinese adolescents. Keywords', adolescents, self-compassion, implicit theories of intelligence, mental health
