New spaces in the desert: Antonioni's interstitial relationships in Red Desert

The goal of this paper is to explore the interstitial relationships of Michelangelo Antonioni's 1964 film, Red Desert. Using Roland Barthes personal letter to Antonioni as a foundational text, I explore the aspects of Red Desert that allow Antonioni to find these new spaces, the "interstice". The relationships associated with this distinction include the connection of painting and film mediums, the first time use of color from the director, and finally the use of space and landscapes. All of these interstitial components add to the alienation affect that is so associated with Antonioni's work, and it is this alienation that mirrors the spaces of Antonioni.
