The migrant crisis in the European Union and nationalist sentiment in host countries

In this study, the author examines the influence of the identity factors on expressions of nationalist sentiments toward immigrant minorities in the European Union (EU). Relying on the assumption that the civic-ethnic framework is relevant, this study is an investigation of whether Eastern Europe is indeed more anti-immigrant than Northern Europe. Hungary and Sweden are utilized as case studies. Using the data from the four rounds of European Social Survey, and two different measurements of the expression and reinforcement of national identity - historical background and the official rhetoric regarding immigration in the host countries, the author shows that, in general, the Eastern region is more restrictive and intolerant toward foreigners than Northern part of the EU.
