Why hasn't North Korea collapsed?: rational choices in East Asia

Events on the Korean peninsula have the potential to endanger the interests of the largest powers in the world, yet it has remained a relatively quiet place for some time. Famine, war, and refugee and migration crises all threaten the region’s stability, making North Korea’s neighbors quite nervous about what could happen should that country collapse. Despite the efforts of the international community, North Korea has continued to demonstrate their unwillingness to follow basic, internationally accepted principles of conduct. This paper examines the reasons and ways that have ensured the continuation of the DPRK despite its high chances of downfall amid the various threats to its economy, security, and domestic stability.
