Between cultures: Chinese immigrant women's experience in higher education

Attaining higher education is not an impossible mission for women in the United States, however, the role higher education plays in the lives of Chinese American immigrant women has not been well studied. This thesis focuses on how Chinese American immigrant women, ages 25-45, balance school with work and family. I argue that family responsibility and financial status are the primary factors impacting to what extent working class Chinese American immigrant women are able to gain higher education in the United States. Using grounded theory to analyze interviews with ten (10) working class Chinese American immigrant women who have been educated in United States community colleges and universities, my study allows working class Chinese American immigrant women to represent their experiences in higher education.
