Stapleton, Emily Ann
This thesis both explores and promotes the value in adapting William
Shakespeare’s tragic play, Macbeth, into a comedy. The research focuses first
on establishing key differences between tragedy and comedy with special
attention to the fundamental tragic characteristics of Macbeth in its original form.
The study then turns to close examination of three notable comedic adaptations
of Macbeth, assessing the adapting playwrights’ specific approaches and
techniques as well as the cultural/social commentaries they effectively
communicate through their comical conversions. The thesis culminates in an
understanding of the immense power in comically retelling tragic stories.

Marti, Greta Louise
The intersection of disability and theatre combines access and art. Theatre, at its best,
shares stories of the human experience yet traditionally stories of disability have been
excluded. In an effort to include and increase disability visibility in the theatre world,
select theatre companies have created accessible opportunities, training programs, and
performance content for people with disabilities. I will explore the range of disability
theatre that exists today by looking at accomplished companies in the field including
Graeae Theatre Company, Hijinx Theatre, and Nicu’s Spoon Theatre Company. In
addition to inclusive theatre on stage, inclusive audience practices will be introduced in
part by looking at the work of Jess Thom and her play Backstage at Biscuit Land. By
looking at the successes of these existing companies and techniques, I will assemble a
vision for a San Francisco theatre company specializing in inclusive theatre practices.

Potter, Anne Melissa
This project will examine a small group of Restoration plays based on French sources. It
will examine how and why the English plays differ from their French sources. This
project will pay special attention to the role that women played in the development of the
Restoration theatre both as playwrights and actresses. It will also examine to what extent
French influences were instrumental in how women develop English drama.

Mohale, Liatile Betty Patricia
The research paper discusses the challenges of institutionalizing drama education in
Lesotho as well as the role that drama education can play in social and economic
development. Drama in schools in the country is discussed rather than performed. For
several reasons, many which are a manifestation of the results of colonial education, the
previous and current administrations of the country have not regarded as being crucial to
the development needs of the country. The thesis argues that the omission of critically
dialogic thinking subjects such as Drama combined with the continued use of the banking
model pedagogy have contributed to a dearth of critical thinking and engagement with
information in Lesotho: a situation which has had devastating effects on the social and
economic development. The paper posits that drama education is critical for developing
critical thinking skills and Human Factor (HF) characteristics if the country is to achieve
its goals of nation building and economic sustainability.
