Arts and society: how Vietnamese independent arts organizations serve and impact communities

In this thesis, the public programming efforts of Vietnamese independent arts organizations are examined to understand their development, operations, and roles in engaging local communities and in supporting Vietnamese artistic development. Because Vietnamese art museums and commercial art galleries have not developed missions that seek deep engagement with communities, and Vietnamese art now attracts global interests, it is important to examine the efforts of these organizations in engaging communities and in supporting Vietnamese artists. A review of the literature concerning the histories, functions, and community engagement strategies of cultural organizations in Vietnam and abroad is conducted, along with four case studies. It is concluded that Vietnamese independent arts organizations successfully engage with communities through diverse, relevant, inclusive, and community-based programming. The organizations meet challenges regarding capacity support and government oversight by operating flexibly and collaborating with other local and international cultural organizations. Finally, several recommendations concerning community engagement, program development and evaluation, and sustainability are outlined.
