Masters Thesis

Marrow & pith

Multiple generations of Appalachian women negotiate traditions of violence and an inheritance of magick as they try to keep themselves and those they love safe. Angeline, the youngest daughter of Cecelia, has disappeared and left her two young children in the care of her unstable mother and ex-husband A.J. The oldest daughter, Helen, returns to Appalachia from a self-imposed exile in Upstate New York to try and find Angeline and care for her young nephews. She is re-exposed to the dangerous and wild magick that engulfs her mother's life as she tries to find out what has happened to Angeline. Past and present echo against one another as Helen confronts the effect that her mother and sister's version of reality has had on her own.
