Yonnondio: a literary mosaic of working-class and feminist resistance

This thesis examines Tillie Olsen's "The Iron Throat" and Yonnondio: From the Thirties as they form a literary mosaic of working-class and feminist resistance from the 1930s. As a kunstlerroman, "The Iron Throat" crafts a new aesthetic within proletarian literature by employing modernist techniques and featuring the inner voice of a working-class girl. Further, Olsen intensifies themes of working-class consciousness and feminism within Yonnondio through a montage of fragments, requiring a reader to complete the "unfinished" text and to recover its historical significance.
