Curatorial responses to demographic changes in American cities

This thesis explores American museums in cities experiencing rapid demographic change, and consequently the curatorial responses to changing audiences. The majority of the population in the United States now lives in metropolitan areas, and the characteristics of urban residents are changing in response to contemporary economies, interests and concerns. A literature review and case studies of museums in cities undergoing demographic change explore the nature of American cities, the transformed role of the 21st-century curator, and the institutional responsibility to represent communities. It is concluded that museums that recognize and respond to the changing urban landscape by reflecting the diverse population of their cities and engaging with relevant social issues, will be better positioned to sustain their future and serve as agents of social change.
