Analysis of sheet electron beam transmission in vacuum tube device

The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the electron beam and determine the cause of instabilities in an existing sheet beam klystron device. A summary of the fundamental operating principles of a klystron is first presented. Then, the experimental methods used are detailed. An array of thermocouples was placed on the body of the klystron to map the increase in temperature during operation, which is linked to interception of the electron beam. Several other methods were attempted, including thermal imaging and x-ray monitoring. Finally, computer models were used to validate both the temperature data and the electromagnetic modes detected. The results of this thesis are that the electron beam is larger than it was designed to be, thus intercepting the anode, and that the klystron cavities oscillate with a higher order mode during operation. Recommendations for improving the temperature data collection and refining the klystron design are then made.
