Meyerhold, Flanagan, and Brecht: the rise and fall of the people's theatre

This thesis explores selected work of Vsevolod Meyerhold, Hallie Flanagan with the Federal Theatre Project, and Bertolt Brecht between the years 1918 and 1951, and the censorship and persecution that each artist experienced under his or her respective government. The experiments conducted by each, primarily between the two World Wars, contributed to the development of a socially relevant, educative theatre for the masses that was feared by authoritarian bureaucrats. This fear of a critically thinking public led to the labelling of these artists and their work as subversive, and each was prohibited from developing theatre to its full potential. Plays discussed include Mystery-Bouffe, The Bedbug, The Bathhouse, Triple-A Plowed Under, Power, One-Third o f a Nation, The Measures Taken, The Mother, and The Trial of Lucullus.
