Peace and Dignity Journeys: emergence of the Eagle and Condor

This thesis examines the foundation, history, and development of the Peace and Dignity Journeys as a movement that aims to fulfill the Quito Quechua Prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor. This prophecy describes a era of Indigenous re-birth and re-empowerment through unity, a theme also present in the other Indigenous prophecies explored in this work. The development of the Journeys is located within contemporary Indigenous decolonization movements. The Peace and Dignity Journeys were initiated in response to the sharing of these prophecies in 1990 at the first Intercontinental Indigenous Gathering in Quito, Ecuador. The purpose of the Journeys is to facilitate the creation of spiritual alliances between Indigenous communities utilizing ceremonial running. The Journeys, occurring every four years since 1992, have birthed spiritual regeneration, renewed international relationships, as well as the uncovering of shared knowledge of history, and culture, which is part of the transition to the new era.
