The incidence of uterine tachysystole in patients being induced with oxytocin

The purpose was to determine occurrence of uterine tachysystole (UT) in patients being induced with oxytocin. This qualitative, retrospective, descriptive study utilized chart audits and analyses of fetal monitor strips on a convenience sample of 55 deliveries in October 2009. Possible consequences are fetal intolerance to labor, hypoxia, asphyxia, increased cesarean births, uterine rupture and postpartum hemorrhage. Incidence of UT had not been studied using all four criteria established by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) identifying a significant gap. In total, 798.5 hours of fetal monitor strips were analyzed. 661 incidences of UT were identified out of 1,597 increments. Fifty-four of 55 patients (98%) demonstrated occurrences of UT. An overall UT rate of 41% was found. Replication of this study and utilizing other educational interventions may help further decrease UT. Heightened awareness may lead to alteration in practice and improve patient outcomes.
